About Us
We are a Hungarian green-left political movement founded in 2019. Our work spans community-building, direct action, and institutional politics. Focusing primarily on housing and labour issues, we fight for the democratisation of the economy, redistributive policies, and a sustainable future for all.
Emerging from social and housing initiatives, we endorsed opposition candidates in the 2019 Budapest municipal election before founding Szikra (‘Spark’) in 2020. After winning the opposition primaries in Budapest's 8/9th district, our candidate, András Jámbor, made it to parliament by flipping the district in the 2022 general elections, becoming our first MP. In June 2024, several of our candidates made it into municipal bodies country-wide.
These successes have shown that a politics based on solidarity, an egalitarian vision, and needs-based policies was possible. Despite decades of neoliberalism and the ascent of Orbán’s authoritarian regime, a left-wing platform could still win in Hungary today. You can watch this video report about our April 2022 electoral victory.
What we do
Internally, we seek to establish a political community based on educational activities, democratic decision-making, and mutual aid.
Externally, we aim to amplify, connect and learn from grassroots organisations, civic initiatives, and trade unions throughout Hungary. We also seek to push for systemic change by entering institutional politics at various levels.
Internationally, we aim to build connections with like-minded projects and reclaim Eastern Europe as a space of hope and emancipation. Along with several East European left-wing movements, we founded CEEGLA — the Central East European Green Left Alliance. Established with the goal of strengthening collaboration between our struggles, facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience, the Alliance was announced in Poland's national parliament in January 2024.
